The Johnson Partnership - Business Defence Service
Founded 1st July 1990
WHO WILL HANDLE MY CASE?

Your case will be handled by a member of the firm's specialist business crime team.
Only a very small number of firms across the country have been accepted onto the Legal Services Commission's Serious Fraud Panel.  We are delighted to say that we are long-established members of the Panel which means you can have confidence in our ability to bring you the best possible service.

The firm has a tried and test track record of defending clients involved in cases in which serious financial or professional impropriety is alleged.

The department is supervised by David Henson.  David has over 30 years of experience in defending clients from all walks of life and many different commercial backgrounds.  A first class degree from Cambridge is the bedrock on which David has built a reputation for his ability to analyse and assimilate huge amounts of evidence in the shortest possible time.  David is able to achieve an early understanding of the nature of an allegation and the evidence which is said to surround it.  This enables David to give clients the certainty that they need to understand the strengths and weaknesses of their position at the outset of an investigation or prosecution.

By way of demonstration, in October 2005, a client facing allegations of £36m  worth of VAT fraud was extradited to the UK from Spain.  Within nine months, a successful application had been made for bail, in spite of warrants having been outstanding for the client's arrest for over five years.  His case was fully prepared, counsel instructed, a trial conducted and an acquittal secured on all charges.

David's no "nonsense" to work means that the best results can be delivered in the shortest time to the satisfaction of all.  Digby Johnson, one of the founding partners of The Johnson Partnership, now works, in part, as a member of the Fraud Team. Chambers & Partners say in A Client's Guide to the UK Legal Profession, "Flamboyant Digby Johnson is renowned for being a showman.  His down to earth approach particularly suits clients.  Serious crime and fraud cases form his stapled diet".

Digby will personally involve himself in the conduct or management of all of the departments cases to ensure a consistency of approach and high quality personal service.

Digby is famed, not only for putting together one of the most exciting teams of young lawyers in the country, but also for a string of TV and radio appearances including a leading role in the Channel 4 documentary series "Partners in Crime".

Stephanie Coates initially trained as a barrister before re-qualifying as a solicitor and becoming wholeheartedly involved in the defence of white collar prosecutions.

Stephanie has worked with the client both in the UK and abroad in the preparation of defences to allegations of VAT fraud, large scale evasions of duty on diesel oil and the largest ever allegation of Internet based conspiracy to defraud the entertainment industry by organised and systematic breaches of copyright.

Jimmy Beck is a senior and well respected member of the Bar.  The team is endlessly strengthened by Jimmy's presence.  The view of senior counsel can be sought at a moment's notice on all aspects of an investigation or prosecution, ensuring that clients can benefit from the advice of someone who looks at the case from a different prospective.

With over 17 years of experience at the Bar, Jimmy has been involved in defending some of the largest prosecutions brought by H M Revenue & Customs, F.A.C.T, and is currently involved in a trial, listed to last for six months, to resolve issues surrounding an alleged carousel fraud where the loss to the Revenue & Customs is said to be in excess of £100m.

Notable successes have included the acquittal of a client prosecuted for a £140m VAT fraud.  The securing of a conditional discharge for a defendant who was successfully prosecuted in a multimillion pound missing trader fraud.  The only acquittal in a nine-handed 29kilo commercial cocaine importation of prosecution.  An eight month conspiracy to cheat, coupled with two extra allegations of conspiring to pervert the course of justice, all of which were successfully concluded.

We have no hesitation in holding out Jimmy Beck as a consummate performer, a skilled advisor and one of the best prepared and most diligent counsel of his era.

Aaron Watson-Weinberg was our first full time white collar crime recruit.  With a history of post-graduate study, Aaron has shown himself to be capable of marshalling digital and documentary evidence and orchestrating a number of remarkable business crime victories.

Aaron involves himself in the day to day preparation of most of the department's case as well as attending court to advise and assist with the longer running Defence cases.

Aaron is becoming renowned for his pleasing manner with clients, his ability to explain court procedures, his excellent working relations with junior and senior counsel alike and his ability to grasp difficult legal concepts and explain them in a readily understandable down to earth manner.
