The UK plans to launch a pilot later in 2025, and a full rollout of digital driving licences by 2027. In this article The Johnson Partnership will be diving into this digital shift and understand what it means for everyday UK motoring.

What Is a Digital Driving Licence?

A digital driving licence enables drivers to store and present their licence directly from their smartphone via the GOV.UK Wallet, a secure app designed to house official government documents. It will work alongside the new GOV.UK One Login.

Timeline & Rollout

  • Summer 2025: Launch of the GOV.UK Wallet pilot, featuring veteran cards and an early version of digital driver’s licence later this year - GOV.UK

  • Late 2025: Phased rollout of digital driving licences begins.

  • By end of 2027: Government aims to offer all key credentials driving licences, DBS, veteran cards digitally, while retaining physical options.

Why This Matters

1. Convenience on the Go

Instead of carrying your driving licence, you can access your driving licence instantly on your smartphone, even when proving your age at shops or airports, and of course, at traffic stops.

2. Greater Security

Digital licences utilise bank-grade security measures such as biometrics, encryption, and remote deactivation. This is to protect your information should your device be lost or stolen.

4. Instant Updates

Your digital licence reflects updates made via the DVLA in real time, such as renewals, endorsements, or address changes will appear instantly.

Things to Bear in Mind

  • Physical licences remain valid and optional, this ensures inclusivity for those without smartphones.

  • Accessibility considerations remain vital, particularly for older drivers or those in areas with poor signal.

  • International recognition is currently limited; most foreign jurisdictions may still require physical licences.

Steps for Drivers
